On 21st of November Achim Menges will give an evening talk on “Rethinking Architecture: Interrelations between Biology and Building” as part of the lecture series of the Institute of Philosophy at the Technical University Darmstadt.
The fascinating lecture series investigates morphogenesis as a driving concept in philosophy, biology, architecture and design. The classical division – here scientific research of causal connections, there the artistic interest in natural forms – has long since ceased to apply. Mathematics picks up Goethe’s motif of organic form and formation, biology deals with developmental laws, physics describes the sudden transition from one configuration to the next. The lecture series is dedicated to the expansion, problematisation and rejection of “form thinking” in the 20th and 21st centuries. Philosophical questions are pursued in dialogue with scientific and engineering research.
